Korean Skincare Tips

Many people envy the flawless skin of Korean women, and that glowing complexion does not come easily. Here are tips released from some of Korea's best dermatologists and cosmetologists.

Your hands are one of the best tools.
When your eyes are tired and sagging downwards, press your palms against your eye sockets and apply a gentle pressure. This will lift the eye area to make you seem more awake.

Use upward and outward motions while washing your face.
While you are washing your face, don't use vertical motions, as this will loosen facial muscles and cause the skin to sag. Instead use upward and outward motions.

Prevent aging prematurely.
You continue to age your whole life, so it is never too early to use anti-aging products and taking precautions against UV rays from the sun. It is vital you never go out into the sun without protection. Be sure to use foundation with SPF 20+ , or apply sunblock before hand. Many Korean BB creams also provide sun protection.

Embrace whitening products.
Korean women use whitening products to combat skin pigmentation problems due to hormone imbalance.

Complex Makeup Steps.
Women in Korea generally apply 17-18 products each day. The makeup routine of a typical Korean woman who wants a flawless complexion has 11 steps:

  1. Preparation: Primer + make-up base (corrects your skin tone)
  2. Foundation
  3. Conceal imperfection (concealer)
  4. Setting: Set and fix foundation with powder or pact (The pact is now the Korean woman’s favourite touch-up item)
  5. Highlighting: Enhance vitality with make-up Brightener
  6. Eye brow
  7. Eye shadow
  8. Eyeliner
  9. Mascara

Ulzzang / Uljjang / 얼짱

"Ulzzang's true definition is "best & "face" = best face in korean. They are basically people with above average looks, sometimes with the use of photoshop and haduri who post their pics online, some becoming internet celebrities."
-Urban Dictionary

~How to become a wannabe ulzzang~

Step 1: Achieve a beautifully flawless face.
Whether it is by taking extra good care of your skin, wearing organic face masks, or arranging a visit to a dermatologist, flawless skin is a must to achieve the ulzzang look. If troubled skin can not be helped, invest in a good foundation or a more popular alternative is Blemish Balm Cream,or BB cream; which can be ordered online from sites such as Amazon.

It is rare to see a tan ulzzang as well, so having a fair complexion is necessary.

Step 2: Circle Lenses.
Almost all popular ulzzangs wear circle lenses to make their eyes appear naturally larger and more richly colored like a doll. Stick to the natural colors such as brown and gray, however some ulzzangs can pull of bright blue such as Yu Ha Min!

Circle lenses can be purchased from sites such as:

Step 3: (OPTIONAL) Wear eyelid tape/glue
This step is merely optional for those with monolids, but almost all ulzzangs have double eyelids. So if you want to achieve that look, apply eyelid glue or tape to the eyes and using the pusher stick, poke into the lid what shape you want until you get your desired crease

Step 4: Apply eye makeup
Ulzzangs try to look like they're wearing little makeup, so a natural,doll-eyed look is ideal! So start by applying white eyeshadow to the lids and extend up to the eyebrow. Also apply and line it near the corner of your eyes. This will open them up and achieve a natural brightness.

Step 5: Applying eye makeup cont. (eyeliner)
Now line the top of your lash line with your favorite liquid eyeliner. It should extend outwards to create a slight cat-eyed look. If you want, take a gray/black pencil liner and tight line the bottom of your lids, making the line thicker as you get to the corner of your eye. Don't line your water line as you want to make your eyes appear larger.

Step 6: Applying eye makeup cont. (eyeshadow)

Next, using a light brush, apply light brown/gray eyeshadow just above your eyelid crease, making your eyelid look larger and more deep set.

Step 7: Applying eye makeup cont. (eyelashes)
Ulzzangs don't typically focus on the lashes, so skip falsies and just apply one coat of black mascara to your lower and upper lashes. This will keep you looking feminine and cute without overdoing it.

Step 8: Lips!
Now that the eyes are complete, you can move on to your lips. To keep them looking subtle, just wear a light pink or clear lip gloss. The look doesn't call for big lips, so don't feel the need to put any emphasis on them!

Step 9: Hair and fashion
You can pretty much wear your hair as you like, there isn't necessarily a typical style for ulzzangs! However, many keep some hair on their face, as it makes you look younger and cute. As for clothing, dress modestly but stylish. It isn't necessary to expose yourself in anyway, as you can still look cute covered up! Most ulzzangs embrace to F.O.B style (Fresh Off The Boat) -loose fitting and lots of layers!

Step 10: The Ulzzang Lifestyle!
Now that you look like an ulzzang and want to be a real one, here are some tips!
Start taking pictures of yourself with a high quality camera, photoshop if necessary, and post them online. Preferably, create a Korean Cyworld profile and post them there. Then maybe one day you'll be famous!
